REAL FUNCTION AND ROD NUMBER (Right Line Weight) OF YOUR ROD?

If you have problems with your fly rod, line and casting the reason is not always in your skills! Sometimes the Rod Line Weigth marked onto your rod simply is not right!
In RODMAKER- magazine (2, 2003) W. HANNEMAN puts forward a simple method to measure the real characteristics of a fly rod: you put a spesific weight to the tip of your rod to bend it downwards 1 / 3 of its length. The weight (number of Eurocoins, Effective Rod Number ERN) and the bending angle (Action Angle AA) describes the characteristics of your rod. In USA the weight is adjusted as local Cent coins (Common Cent System, CC -system). An American Cent is 2.50 grams, 38.61 grains. Because we do not have so many US Cents here in Europe I have translated the tables to Eurocoins: 5 Eurocent is 3.92 gram and 1 Eurocent is 2.30 gram.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure the length of your rod. Fix the rod horizontally, the first 30 cm should not bend. Measure 1 / 3 of the length of the rod downwards from the rod-tip. Fix (tape) a small plastic bag to the tip-top of the rod. Put Eurocoins to the bag to bend it 1 / 3 of the length downwards. Count the number of coins and compare to the table to see the real weigth class of the rod. Measure the bending angle of the tip (see the figure). A fast rod has a more steeply downwards bending tip (red tip in the FIGURE). A slow rod has a smaller angle (green tip in the FIGURE) You may use a angle-meter (gonio-meter) or use the simple graphics given below.

BENDING as ACTION ANGLE (AA) = FUNCTION W. Hanneman RodMaker 2003
Less than 59 degrees = SLOW
59 - 63 degrees = MODERATE
63 - 66 degrees = MODERATE / FAST
More than 66 degrees = FAST

You may measure the 59, 63 and 66 degrees as following: Take a piece of graph paper and draw a right angle (90 degrees) Count 20 units (boxes) downwards. Count 12 units (boxes) to the horizontal line - that is 59 degrees. Count 10 units (boxes) to the horixzontal line - that is 63 degrees. Count 9 units (boxes) to the horizontal line - that is 66 degrees. See the FIGURE for details, the GREEN rod is slow and the RED rod is fast with the proper weight fixed to the tip.

NUMBER OF COINS AND ROD NUMBER (ERN)

Value 4.0-4.9 means a number #4 and an ERN value 4.5 in the table means a typical rod for #4 line.
